Descendant

The Film. Descendant is a historical documentary about the way the past and the truth are always present. Descendants of the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to arrive in the United States, reclaim their history.

The Campaign. Partnering with community-led organizations, the campaign brought attention to the power of oral storytelling by preserving and documenting the legacy of the survivors of the Clotilda and their descendants, and helped combat environmental issues threatening the community of Africatown.

Roles: content strategist, content producer, lead copywriter, partnership manager

I supported the production of a three-part web series called “The Descendant Cookout” hosted by Stephen Satterfield. The cookout served as a roundtable for descendants like Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and his family, activists, and Africatown residents to discuss issues facing their community.

The #DescendantChallenge on Instagram invited audiences to share their family stories via daily prompts. Stephen Satterfield, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama participated in the challenge. And custom social media content engaged viewers to learn more about the characters in the documentary as well as the environmental issues in Africatown.
